Yes it's only May but with the Keselowski rumours it's time for this thread already.

As I stated in shoutbox today: According to Motorsport.com, an offer has been made for him to drive the 6 and take an ownership stake in the team. They also suggested an expansion to a third car for Newman.
Edit to source: https://www.motorsport.com/nascar-cup/news/keselowski-roush-penske-owner-driver/6510977/

I think this move would make sense for all parties. It allows Brad a pathway to a career post-racing (which he is closing in on), and it allows Penske to promote diBenedetto, with Cindric obviously already guaranteed that Wood Brothers seat.

My question is, does Brad still think he can win now? Does Penske still want him? And if not, is it Matty D he wants to replace him? please be so...

Mad theory:

Roush-Fenway-Keslowski-Vendetta-Prang-bahnwagen-gutenabend-bitte-ein-nürnburger-bratwustle-gerspurten-mitzweimache-luber-hundsfut-gumberaber-shönendanker-kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm. Racing:
6 - Newman
16 - Keslowski
17 - Buscher

Team Penske:
2 - Cindric
12 - Blaney
22 - Logano
33 - MacLaughlin (wildcard Daytona 500)

Wood Brothers:
21 - Di Benedetto

I think that the only thing that happens is that Roush-Fenway buys a RWR charter (they are looking to sell one anyway) and Cindric moves into 2.
BK is obviously asking for too much cash. Remember, he is only on a contract extension for 2021.

The thing is that Cindric already has a contract for the 21 for 2022. I think he'd be perfectly happy to move straight up, and so would WBR (particularily if Matty D gets that 100th win this year) but would Roger?

Did you read this properly:
https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2...ric-team-penske-multiyear-contract-extension/
Team Penske announced today that the organization is extending its driver development program by signing Austin Cindric to a contract extension that will see the 22-year-old remain with the team through the foreseeable future...
- NASCAR, 8th Oct 2020

Cindric is a Penske contracted driver, not a Wood Bros. driver. He would have been leased to Wood Bros.
For Penske and Wood Bros. to swap drivers makes not a lot of sense for crew consistency reasons.

True true, it's just they made such a big deal of him driving the 21 in 2022 when they extended DiBenedetto that I'm not sure they'd go back on that.

Remember when Philip Brock won Bathurst in 1983? No? That's because it didn't happen.
Even though you're listed as an entrant; if you've got your name on the door, even if you qualified the car, it all counts for diddly squat until bum time happens.

Ganassi "swapped" 41 for 1 at some point.
Kyle Petty had 42; which meant that Ganassi Racing too 40, 41 and 42. SHR now has 41 to go with 14, 4 and 10.
It makes no sense for Ganassi to keep 1 or 42. Both are essentially meaningless legacy items now.

If I get to be Grand Poohbah and Lord High Everything Else then,

I would say Brad brings back #29 to Cup for himself.

+1 this is sensible.

SHR can have 1 to replace 10 - 1, 4, 14, 41 is more sensible.

Chip Ganassi Keslowski Vendetta And Prang With Cheese can have: 29, 39, 49; or possibly, 27, 28, 29.

1 and 42 is very silly.

Is it possible Newman goes to the #21 ? and Matty D. doesn't get a ride? and does Kurt Busch stay in the #1 Car or does he leave ?

I suspect that Roush Fenway is one of those teams which has given up on Gen-6 and is quietly happy that they've locked in their lineup for 2022 and Gen-7. I do not think that either Newman or Buescher are likely to move.

Having said that, John W Henry is a knave and I think that he is part of the reason why the team is in the doldrums.

I’d think Newman keeps the 6. He himself has said that he feels that he has “more left to prove”, probably wants to get a win before he retires, especially after the accident. I don’t see either of those drivers being moved, maybe Buescher being leased to a team again but that’s unlikely.

As for PENSKE, I completely agree with Rolo a few messages above. Dib back in the 21 for crew consistently sake, place Cindric in the 2, Blaney in the 12, Joey in the 22. Ole Scotty in the 33 for a one off at Daytona...I like that a lot.

23XI being thrown into the mix is also interesting. Kurt has said that he wants to run one more year, but if 23XI comes calling for a second car, I’d assume he would take it? The person filling the 1 would be interesting...

Here’s my (wild) theory for that scenario. Monster and Dr Pepper are rival sponsors, Monster would likely not follow Kurt to 23XI because Dr Pepper is contracted to the team. They already have sponsors willing to step up for a second car, DraftKings is one of them. Now, NOS is owned by Monster Beverage. Monster Energy stays at CGR as they hire Ricky Stenhouse Jr to drive the 1 car for 2022.

Thoughts...?

Matty D would still likely get a ride, because he's good and I'm not biased.

My theory is that RFR would expand to three cars for Brad, or Newman would retire.

Rumor has it, that Kurt Busch is going to a second team at 23XL racing and I think it is a good idea. But Stenhouse Jr. to the #1? I hope not, I'm still not convince that he is a good race driver, ok at best.

Keeping Matty D. in the 21 makes since, even though he doesn't have a contract for next year. Yet !!

I still think Newman is leaving the #6... he just hasn't had the results. But the silly season is just getting started... !

Two questions to this.

1. Does Newman have the fire to keep going?
2. Do RFKRM or whatever they'll be called want to run two or three cars?

If the answer to 1 is no, he retires and Brad comes in.
  • If the answer to 2 is two in this case, nothing changes.
  • If the answer to 2 is three in this case, they find another driver. Maybe a JTG car if they downsize, or a rookie (Herbst for funding? Particularily if KB's Monster sponsorship is no longer required)
If the answer to 1 is yes, he keeps on and Brad comes in in a third car.

If Kurt goes to 23XI, then apart from camping on top of a charter, what is the point of Ganassi Racing in NASCAR at this point?
Kyle Larson dragged that #42 to places it never deserved to be and Chastain hasn't exactly set the world on fire. If Kurt Busch leaves, then what?

They're 1-2 in the IndyCar Series; so that's obviously what they care about.

Chip has always cared about CART/Indy more than Nascar.

The Target money use to pay for the Cup stuff, their name being on the car was almost a B2B deal. Once they left, CGR dropped off performance as there was no R&D money.
