OK I know I've been working on a 1968 Trans Am carset in every sim under the sun, and like those, this one has content shortcomings, BUT this one has some real advantages over the others. AC via Content manager has a grid setup feature so the cars can be placed on the grid in the order they qualified. HUGE when coupled with the rating system which seems to work well in the limited testing I've done...so far.

So with that said, I'll start dropping images of the finished cars. NOTE: I will be using any accurate skins which come with the sim/mods.

Again this is just the Riverside set at this point, Race 12 of 13 in 1968.

riverside68_2-vi.jpg
Race on 2.6 mile course (Club or Short) for FIA Group I and II cars in over and under 2- liter classes.
Race length: 96 laps @ 250 miles: 2 hrs, 38 min, 8.6 sec.
Winner’s average speed: 94.699 mph. Winner’s margin of victory: 7 seconds.

32 cars (19 O2 & 13 U2) started the race, 22 finished, with only the 1st and 2nd place cars on the lead lap.

#1 Jerry Titus Shelby Ford Mustang
preview.jpg
Jerry Titus won the P2 [1:34.3] starting spot for the Riverside stop of the Trans Am Series in 1968. The race didn't go his way as he was sidelined after just 15 laps with a blown engine...But he didn't go down without a fight as he and Mark Donohue traded the lead back and forth over his short stint in race 12. Engine problems plagued the Shelby Ford effort all season long, Ford insisted on the use of their Ford engines but they were unreliable to the point of perhaps causing the very lopsided effort agains the Penske/Donohue juggernaut...when the team went with the Shelby engines from their own shop they finished much better simply by finishing. The team won the only three races (Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Riverside) NOT won by Donohue and those with the Shelby power aboard. Titus would leave the Shelby Team after the Riverside event and begin a successful albeit ill-fated Pontiac Firebird relationship at the final event at Kent.

#2 Horst Kwech Shelby Ford Mustang
preview.jpg
Horst Kwech participated in the Trans Am Series from the very first race in 1966 @ Sebring finishing a strong 5th overall and 4th in class. Side note many people don't realize that that first Trans-Am race in the famous 12 Hour event was won by an Under 2-liter car and only three of the top ten finishers were in the more widely popularized Over 2-liter class. The pony cars finished second in that first event. Jochen Rindt won the Sebring Trans-Am race in an Alfa GTA, and Kwech would make his Trans Am name in the U2 class driving the same.

In 1968, after 2 years of successfully campaigning the Alfa, Kwech would cross over to Shelby racing's O2 Mustangs after running the Alfa in the first four races. It was a tough go from the start as Kwech would fail to finish at Mid-Ohio in his first O2 run. The rest of 1968 would be up and down but culminate with the win at Riverside after Titus and Donohue parked their rides with engine failures. It was not an easy win as Peter Revson's Javelin raced him hard for the win, ultimately Horst Kwech would best him by 7 seconds after a last-lap stumble by Revson.

A little sidebar: Javelins, Carset Blues, and Trans Am history....

Javelin 3_68.jpg
Silk Purse From A Sow's Ear? Seriously, it's the 1968 Peter Revson RKE Javelin paint on the 1971 Javelin AMX...it's all I have to work with at this point...just watched 55 laps of a 98 lap 1968 Riverside re-enactment, trying to convince myself that this was "fine"...????

3 bridge.JPG
The real McCoy @ Bridgehampton

On another note, the race interestingly enough also had one each Lotus Cortina, Mini Cooper, and a lone BMW 2002tii in the U2 class...I had a Beemer, and also one of two Lancia Fulvia's out with the O2 Ponies I have done to see how they would play together... it went well...:)

#3 Peter Revson Ronnie Kaplan Engineering AMC Javelin (on the '71 Javelin AMX model)

Peter Revson started P5 at Riverside in what would also be his last drive for the Ronnie Kaplan Engineering AMC Team, he would jump ship and move over to the Shelby Ford Mustang Team driving the #1 (vacated by Jerry Titus who moved to a Firebird) joining Horst Kwech. Revson himself was replaced in the #3 by Lothar Motschenbacher for the final race of 1968 at Kent (Pacific Raceways) teaming with George Follmer for Ford. "And NASCAR thinks it invented "Silly Season") The RKE Javelin Team was indeed the "little team that could" or tried might be a better word. Kaplan had the factory AMC backing and the team was making great strides in bring what was a brand new mark to the racing world, tons of runner up finishes, a few near wins, loads of mechanical troubles would be the theme of the '68 season for RKE. In 1969 RKE would get one more try at grabbing the Trans Am Championship with a new driver stable after George Follmer left to join Parnelli Jones at the Bud Moore Racing factory Ford Mustang team, (Ford was splitting their efforts with bothe Shelby and Moore for the 1969 Trans Am effort. Ronnie Kaplan would lose the AMC deal to Penske Racing in what many thought of an underhanded backdoor deal. So for 1970, Roger Penske was unable to get GM to come out of the shadows and give him an "in the open, full factory backing", so Penske went and stole AMC from Kaplan, something Kaplan never really got over.

My disdain for Penske is not without cause...but let's not count his numerous sins in this thread...

Where was I? Oh yes Peter Revson, Revson would finish 2nd at Riverside in 1968, just 7 seconds behind Horst Kwech's Mustang. 7 seconds could be considered close at Riverside, but also a lifetime...

The 1968 Trans Am Race 12 @ Riverside O2 Class field, all 19 cars.
preview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpg
1-Jerry Titus, 2-Horst Kwech, 3-Peter Revson, 4-George Follmer, 5-Malcolm Starr, 6-Mark Donohue
preview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpg
8-Ken Deckman, 9-Ray Wolfe, 13-Bob Barker, 16-Frank Search, 17-Dick Guldstrand, 19-Dick Richards
preview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpgpreview.jpg
55-Jon Ward, 64-Tony Settember, 73-Bob McGinty, 77-Craig Fisher, 78-Ronnie Bucknum, 79-Mark Waco
preview.jpg
98-Jerry Oliver

Obviously some compromises had to be made to get all the cars into the set, the AMC Javelins as discussed before are way wrong as far as the model year goes and the 1968 Firebird is painted on the '68 Camaro with no proper '68 Firebird in AC...BTW the #77 Firebird is still being refined just wanted to put up a class picture... `6`

Well it would seem that this Riverside track won't handle 31 cars so the U2 thing will have to be a completely different dealio...sad face

But I've packed up all 19 of the O2 cars for upload, just need to figure out how to explain how to install the grid preset which has the car ratings and the starting order for the Riverside Trans Am in 1968...

The file is in a place I can't seem to navigate to...I'm puzzled...looks like this:

Capture.JPG

I can find the "Bill" folder but there is no "AppData" folder in it...furthermore, there is no user called "Bill" ??????? I'm confused, I've attached the grid preset file to this post...I'm going to build a file with all that hierarchy and see if it'll install with CM...

So I thought I'd test out the waters at Race Department with an upload of one of my set cars and see if they let it fly...
It's only been live for a few minutes and it's already gotten 9 downloads...check it out here:
#5 Mustang at RD

Download it if you'd like to help a Bro out...

OK so after letting this sit for a spell, it seems that no one had an issue with me using the oft hated on SBH/Bazza mod, I uploaded all 19 cars plus my driver and they've gotten 100= downloads each so I'll call it a success.

I'll move on to some other races from 1968 that feature some other cars or the yellow Shelby 'stangs.
