So, I'm trying my hand at making my own templates, and I'm pretty much stuck on making the shading and highlights. I understand using blending options to make them appear correctly on dark and light cars, but the act of actually shaping the shading itself to create the bodylines of the car and the lighting that it should I just can't do. Any tips and advice for making shading?

You can use gradients, smudge tool, or a shape with faded edges, many different ways to go about it and some are better at some things than others.

A little hit and miss trial and error and practice goes a long way, try different things, you'll learn a ton that way

Once I get started on the shading, I'll post some pictures of it here. Car I'm working on is a Mercedes C-Class since the Mercedes template out there isn't very good, and fictional cars and things like that are very interesting to me. I'm using Bill's Chevy SS template as the base, though I originally tried, and may even attempt going back to his his Ford Fusion template because it more closely matches the shape of the C-Class nose. The problem I run into with that body is that I can't get the headlights up next to the grill like they are supposed to be, hence the Chevy body. The passenger side light is way low because that was my first attempt trying not to go over the mesh seam, but I sucked it up and just crossed it anyway on the driver side. It still looks like it should go higher but I don't think I have the skill to do that yet, the light over the seam isn't actually as seamless as it should be, the edges just match up, but the interior portion of the light has a noticeable seam.
