The Kenny Irwin Fan Project over on Instagram filled me in on this Martinsville specific version on the Tonka scheme. For only 10 minutes of alteration work in the Richmond car - I was happy to oblige
I was a big fan of Ernie Irvan during the 90s and by extension the larger RYR organization. But I would argue that he never really came back from his brush with death in '95. Sure, he won again but the personality and humor that existed before that crash was never quite there. Made me sad that he just kind of faded into the background of the sport before taking a turn in the announcers booth.
As much as I love these 'classic' colors - I really dug the look of the neon yellow and blue Havoline schemes that Rudd ran and the later yellow, blue and silver schemes on the #42
Rudd's change in '02 was a nice update. McMurray's looked cool in '03 also.
The 90s were a wonderful time when colorful cartoon characters were plastered all over the sides of various entries week in and week out. I always looked forward to seeing them on track.
Bustin through into the 30s and still going! Bahari racing in 1997 - their final year with Pennzoil as a sponsor and Johnny Benson's final year with them before going to Roush.
I feel like mustaches were a requirement to drive for RCR in 1997.
And thus the birth of one of my all-time favorite schemes. If only Skinner had better luck.
