I'm pretty sure Petty didn't run the taillight decals until 2000 but doesn't mean they didn't use them on that car to break up that graphic. But it does look like that car might have them. Obviously these are from 2000 but the white spots on the taillights look visible on both sides and lines up to the rods on the spoiler like these. Looks similar how they stopped the yellow on the back of the 43 Cheerios cars by using the taillights to do it. Around that time Petty usually did the back like that so I believe that car has the tailights to stop the graphic from going all the way across the tv panel. Just used the taillights to stop it. So yeah 100% think that car has the taillights the more I look at it.

Yeah, those have to be taillights. If you compare it with official diecast pictures of the rear (which show the blast color across the rear), you can clearly tell that it is something completely different there on the car. And the only possible thing, would be the taillight decals.

That 'does' look like taillights to me as well. Just wish this could have been in 1080p to be able to know for sure.

I just find it super odd that the #44 would be the only Pontiac in the field to be sporting the taillight decals........ not only the only Pontiac - but the only car in general to have the tailight decals.....

If I remember correctly the manufacturers forced the teams to start using the taillight decals in 2000. So more than likely the teams were already getting them but just not using them would be my guess until they had to. At least with Pontiac I guess since Ford and Chevy never used them because the body changes in 2000. So they could of had them later in 99 getting ready for 2000. Would be my guess but it's odd for sure.

Talking with Winston West driver Kelly Tanner a little bit on Facebook the last 2 days. His Motegi entry is the last one to finish up. Bit of a fun story I'm getting from him (they ALL seem to be fun stories from around this time period!) - I was curious why his sponsors from that time period seemed to be so eclectic and span the food, clothing and sport industries. He says that his actual sponsor was Japanese-American businessman Junki (Yunki) Yoshida who made his money in teriyaki sauce and then started buying up other smaller area brands in Oregon that he thought might profit. That's why his cars had randomly matched things like Mr. Yoshida's Sauce, Prison Blues Workwear, MLY (Molly) Snowboards, etc.....

For his Motegi car in particular - as per his wishes - I'm leaving the hood blank. There is a sponsor there but Kelly does not want to promote them at all as they never paid him what was owed.

Well, the car is so obscure even for that particular race most people would never even know the difference.
Did he at least confirm who the sponsor was?

No, he was pretty adamant that he would not confirm the sponsor. Sounds like a particularly bad situation - but I know he's not alone. The more I talk with the driver's from the lower series in the late 90s the more I hear about the plethora of fly-by-night bad-faith sponsorship deals that never netted the owners/drivers anything.
