In today's silly season news,
Jeffrey Earnhardt announces on Twitter that he is not returning to JD Motorsports (Jeffrey Earnhardt Not Returning to JD Motorsports, Seeking Race-Winning Opportunities for 2022 | TobyChristie.com)
Front Row Motorsports will remain a two car team, with Michael McDowell back for another year. However, Anthony Alfredo has been released from the team. His replacement is TBA, but expect someone with money (Front Row Motorsports to stay two car team in 2022; Alfredo released; Truck team TBD - Jayski's NASCAR Silly Season Site)

If Dodge was to come back to NASCAR, it will be a great day for the sport. I was disappointed to see Dodge depart from NASCAR after the 2012 season (massive bummer we never got to see the Gen-6 2013 Dodge Charger R/T on-track), but it would fantastic news if they decided to come back and hit the track for the first time in 10+ years. Would love to purchase a Gen-7 Dodge Charger R/T diecast from Lionel Racing one day in the future (even if their quality control woes result in lackluster cars every now and then).

** Probably Wrong **

Dodge (Fiat) entering now is kinda pointless. From a brand POV, sure.. sales. But from a motorsport side of things, they don't have an engine package. It's still EFI and not direct injection. The reason Dodge left at the end of '12 as there was no shop able to build the motors with Penske going to Ford using Roush/Yates motors. Unless Dodge delivers haulers loads of $$$$$ to Penske, I don't see it happening.

@Rollo75 Your the history/engine tech guy.

Chrysler current sell the Eagle EZD Hemi V8 from 5654cc all the way out to 6407cc.
They could probably raid the parts bin of their normal road cars if they're making 707bhp in some models.

EFI (I'm assuming this means port injection) as opposed to Direct Injection for the purposes of this discussion, is fine.
Really the only discussion there has to do with the materials technology which is necessary to stop the tips of the injectors fouling in the heat of the combustion chamber.

Chrysler is now a Stellantis property; which is a 50-50 joint venture of Fiat SpA and PSA Group.

Ok, so engines can be built. But by whom?

ECR, TRD & Roush/Yates are the 3 for the 3 manufacturers. Or does Gibbs still build? Penske still have their shop?

Would Dodge be willing to have engine failures in their first year back on the main stage without losing face?

At least when they returned before they went through Trucks first, same for Toyota.

This is all assuming that they're going to Cup. It quite clearly says that it's one of the three series but doesn't specify, which makes me think it's more likely they go to Trucks, where there's more sales of the relevant production models and more potential team partners.

Wild stab in the dark... Keith Black?

Keith Black already builds Mopar power for drag racing. If you already have someone who builds engines which exceed the maximum power demands, then dialling that back to gain reliability is usually doable.

I would expect that any major motor manufacturer should in theory be able in principle to build engines to do the job and bench test them before they ever turned a wheel

In theory yes. But look at all the failures teams had when they switched to using the same engine all weekend instead of qual engines etc

The answer everyone is overlooking to who will spearhead the Dodge program is more then likely Stewart Haas Racing. Think about it. Tony Stewart is not on good terms with Ford after they let Larson slip through his fingers. he is engaged to Leah Pruett, who is a Dodge factory driver, and on the NHRA side, he has hired Matt Hagan, who again, is a Dodge factory driver.

The whole TSR NHRA program isn't just Tony simping for his GF, it is a way to get the foot in the door to the Mopar camp and get cozy with the high brass.

Noah Gragson to Attempt to Qualify for 2022 Daytona 500 with Beard Motorsports (credit to Jayski):

Beard Motorsports has selected Noah Gragson to drive its No. 62 Chevrolet Camaro in the 64th running of the Daytona 500 Feb. 20 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

It marks Gragson’s return to Beard Motorsports, as the generational race team founded by the late Mark Beard Sr., and now run by his wife, Linda Beard, tabbed Gragson for last year’s Daytona 500. Unfortunately, Gragson was collected in a multicar accident just four laps short of the finish in his 150-mile qualifying race, which prevented him from advancing to the Daytona 500.

As a non-chartered team, Beard Motorsports has no guaranteed starting spot in the Daytona 500, meaning it has to race its way into The Great American Race.

“To say that we can’t wait to get back to Daytona is a massive understatement,” said Amie Beard, executive vice president, Beard Motorsports. “From the moment my father founded this race team, we all took a tremendous amount of pride in showing up and performing right alongside the established teams in the sport. Last year didn’t go the way we wanted, but that’s just made us more motivated to return.”

That motivation is echoed by Mark Beard Jr., who helps his sister, Amie, manage the race team.

“We have a NextGen car, we have Noah, and we still have our alliance with Richard Childress Racing,” he said. “Some folks might be ready for the offseason, but we’re definitely on for Daytona.”

Gragson has a similar mindset. With qualifying unavailable at the other superspeedway races in 2021, Beard Motorsports didn’t have the chance to race again. The 2022 Daytona 500 provides that long-sought opportunity for Beard Motorsports to get back to the track and Gragson to get that first career NASCAR Cup Series start.

“I’m so happy to have this opportunity to return to Daytona with Beard Motorsports,” said the 23-year-old Gragson. “It was good to get a taste of Cup racing in last year’s Duel, but it left us all wanting more. We’ve got some unfinished business down there.”

Helping take care of that unfinished business is Brendan Gaughan. The former NASCAR Cup Series driver who finished his racing career with Beard Motorsports is now its vice president of racing operations.

“All of us look forward to having Brendan up on the pit box with us,” said Linda Beard. “He has been with us since the beginning and become a part of our family. His personality and his relationships in this sport are essential to our race team. In a season where seemingly everything is new, his presence provides stability. It’s great to have him next to me as we continue this journey.”

Beard Motorsports has proven to be the little team that could, a modern-day David competing against the Goliaths of the NASCAR Cup Series. The team employs just one fulltime person – crew chief Darren Shaw – and has since its debut in the 2017 Daytona 500 when Gaughan finished 11th.

Beard Motorsports makes it all work by taking a strategic approach to its racing endeavors. Its alliance with Richard Childress Racing and singular focus on the superspeedway races at Daytona and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway have yielded solid results, most recently a pair of top-10 finishes at Daytona in 2020 – seventh in the Daytona 500 and eighth in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 – both at the hands of Gaughan.

“Beard Motorsports has proven that it can run with the big teams there at Daytona, and I’m just really looking forward to getting another crack at it,” Gragson said. “We know we have to race our way into the Daytona 500, and I’m very appreciative of the faith the Beard Family has in me.”

Gragson is a five-time winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the first of which came in the 2020 season opener at Daytona. His recently completed 2021 season netted three wins and a spot in the Championship 4, where the Las Vegas-native ultimately finished a career-high third in points. The 2022 season will be Gragson’s fourth full year in the Xfinity Series and he returns to the familiar No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports.

I expect Dodge to announce their return midway through the 2022 season. The NHRA connection definitely gives Stewart Haas Racing the favorite to make the switch. Team Penske is another option, though they seem to be on better terms with Ford than Stewart Haas Racing.

Speedway Motorsports, LLC Looking to Rebuild North Wilkesboro Speedway (credit to Speedway Motorsports):

60b17016ed650.image.jpg

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Nov. 19, 2021)The following is a statement from Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith on funding for North Wilkesboro Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway being included in North Carolina’s 2022 budget as part of the American Rescue Plan:

Marcus Smith, Speedway Motorsports President and CEO:

“I’d like to thank Gov. Roy Cooper, House Speaker Tim Moore, Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and all our state legislators for their support of motorsports and economic development in the new state budget. The allocated funds from the American Rescue Plan are investments in the future for the motorsports and tourism industries of North Carolina.

“While Charlotte Motor Speedway is considered modern by many standards, it’s still more than 60 years old and in need of infrastructure improvements to maintain its position as an attractive venue for world-class events. We’ll use the state allocation toward upgrading fan amenities along our frontstretch, and we’ll have more details to share at a later date as we prepare for the Coca-Cola 600 next May.

The allocation toward North Wilkesboro provides the starting capital needed to rebuild the infrastructure of the historic facility. With state budget amounts now finalized, we can zero in on project priorities and determine work schedules. The goal will be to modernize the property so that it can host racing and special events again in the future.

“I’d also like to thank all the members of the Wilkes County community who have donated their time and hard work to help demolish old buildings and clear brush and debris. We are truly grateful for what you’ve already done, and we look forward to rebuilding North Wilkesboro Speedway.”

Looks like Rockingham Speedway (The Rock) is going to get some major work done in the near future with all of the money they got recently as part of the American Rescue Plan in the hopes of getting racing series back at the track:

Mike Harmon Dealt L2 Penalty for Violating NASCAR's Testing Policy at Rockingham Speedway, Driver Caesar Bacarella Suspended Indefinitely for Violation of NASCAR's Substance Abuse Policy (credit to NASCAR.com):

NASCAR announced significant Xfinity Series penalties on Monday for a pair of isolated infractions.

Owner/driver of the No. 74 Chevrolet Mike Harmon was assessed an L2 penalty for violating Section 5.1.a.c.d: Vehicle testing in the NASCAR Rule Book. He’ll incur a loss of 75 owner points and 75 driver championship points, to be applied in the 2022 season. NASCAR fined crew chief Ryan Bell $50,000 and suspended him from the next six championship points events, also to begin starting in 2022.

Earlier this month, Mike Harmon Racing posted images of the No. 74 car turning laps at Rockingham Speedway.

Harmon competed in one Xfinity race in 2021, finishing 39th in October at Martinsville Speedway.

Separately, NASCAR indefinitely suspended driver Caesar Bacarella for violation of Sections 12.1; 19, substance abuse policy. Bacarella competed in five Xfinity races in 2021 behind the wheel of the No. 90 Chevrolet with a best finish of 12th in the season-opener at Daytona. Bacarella also co-owns Alpha Prime Racing.

#27 - This is going to be run because Jacques Villenueve will be the driver part-time.

Jacques Villenueve wants 27 because 27 was the number of his dad Giles, at Ferrari.

Ferrari got 27 & 28 after swapping with Williams in 1981.

40 year story?

I'm suprised Jacques is giving it another go, considering how his first stint turned out, with him mainly being reduced to a ringer for Montreal.
